In Pursuit of Better

Understanding Feelings | ft. Bronwyn Schweigerdt

Episode Summary

Bronwyn Schweigerdt may be the most evocative psychotherapist you’ve ever heard. Instead of fixing peoples’ messes, her goal is to elicit feelings people are most ashamed to have, such as hatred and rage. She knows that even though feelings are invisible, they don’t evaporate, but store away in our bodies until processed. According to Bronwyn, these feelings (and we all have them) haunt us and cause mental illness until we express them into words with someone who can hear and validate them. She especially loves playing midwife in this way, helping her clients – and now, her podcast listeners – externalize painful feelings once and for all. She has experienced success in helping people break free of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, even psychosis, by reconnecting them to their anger, and healing their relationship with anger, and with themselves. Having a healthy relationship with anger allows us to discern what's true and to trust ourselves. It's a necessary first step in creating boundaries and assertiveness. It sets us free from dysfunctional relationships and environments, as we no longer abandon ourselves. Bronwyn is a firm believer that what makes experience traumatic is going through it alone, verses an emotionally-shared experience. She finds once the feelings from trauma are articulated and shared by a compassionate other, the trauma dissipates. What's shareable is bearable. Feelings aren't made to be felt in isolation.
